With the Junior Edition of “Technical Foundations of the Oboe,” Andreas Mendel and Andrea Glaser-Riefellner present a collection of effective and systematic exercises specifically designed for advanced beginners. The exercise book helps players gradually consolidate the technical foundations of oboe playing and integrate them confidently into their daily practice.
The main focus is on warm-up exercises, embouchure, tone production, legato, air flow, and finger technique. The exercises are clearly structured and deliberately reduced in both scope and range, making them particularly suitable for younger oboists and for players transitioning to more demanding technical exercises. The range is largely limited to c' to c''', making the book suitable also for instruments that do not have the low B or B♭ keys.
The Junior Edition begins with fundamental warm-up exercises, including an embouchure exercise on the reed, slow scales, as well as fifths and fourths. A tone and legato exercise by Albrecht Mayer complements this section. Particularly useful for further technical development is the exercise for moving into the next octave, which specifically trains the necessary rocking motion of the half-hole key.
This is followed by systematic exercises in major and minor keys of up to three sharps or three flats. In addition to scales and various scale patterns, the book covers chromatic scales, thirds, staccato, and triads. In the minor section, harmonic, melodic, and natural minor are included. The result is a compact yet versatile foundation for developing finger technique, coordination, articulation, and musical confidence.
The Junior Edition is deliberately more concise and less extensive than the Majer and Minor Editions, making it particularly suitable for players for whom the larger editions are still too demanding or comprehensive. At the same time, it provides an excellent foundation for the systematic development of technical skills on the oboe.
An additional benefit for oboists in Austria: the exercises cover the technical requirements for the transition examination from the lower to the intermediate level in the Upper Austrian music school system (“Land am Ton – Bronze”), as well as the Bronze Level Performance Certificate of the Austrian Wind Music Association.
