Why does the bed length matter?
The cane must match the bed length held securely in the gouging machine by the holding mechanism. If the cane is too long, it won’t fit; if it’s too short, it can shift and cause inaccurate gouging.
Standard lengths are 120 mm for bassoon and 150 mm for contrabassoon. Cane may be shortened after gouging, but it must match the bed length during the gouging process.
