Start Off Right
A reed that's cut unevenly is already fighting against you before you've scraped anything. The redesigned Reed Guillotine makes sure that never happens. More compact than its predecessor, it slips easily into your case – so the same precision that's on your workbench is with you in the rehearsal room, on tour, or wherever you're making reeds that day.
A clear millimeter scale – with markings for the most common bassoon and contrabassoon lengths already built in – lets you set your exact target length in seconds. A dedicated groove keeps the wire out of the way, and the hardened steel blade cuts cleanly through reeds up to 22 mm wide. When it eventually needs it, we can resharpen the cutting unit for you.
One clean cut. The right length, every time.
Easy to Use
The mandrel holder now swivels upward, so placing and removing your reed is as smooth as butter. Less time wrestling with the machine means more attention where it belongs – on the reed.
Even
Even with the swiveling mandrel, the reed stays held at a perfect 90 degrees to the cutting blades. The cut is always even, always symmetrical – so both blades start equal before you've made a single scrape.
Centered
Guide lines on the blades show you exactly when the reed is centred and square – so the cut lands perpendicular to the reed's axis, not at a slight angle that throws off the whole blade. What you see before you cut is what you get after.
Positioned Exactly
A knurled knob at the end of the mandrel lets you push or pull the reed into position with ease – precise, controlled, and without disturbing the alignment you've just set.
Tuned
How freely the mandrel slides is entirely up to you. Tighten the screw on the underside for firm, deliberate movement – or loosen it for a lighter glide. Either way, the machine responds the way you want it to.
You can remove the tarnish with metal polish.
Why is there some tarnish on my blades? The reason why we use a steel that creates a patina over use is a technical one. The cutting abilities of such a steel are better than those of stainless steels.
What can I do to check the quality of the cut?You can check the cut by trying to cut a piece of paper. If the blade does the job then there is no need to exchange them. If they do not, it can be for two reasons: 1. The blade is really blunt. Then an exchange of blades would be good. 2. The 4 screws that hold the front blade are too loose. Tighten them just enough the cutting blade can be moved tight up and down but the blade cannot wobble. Start with the upper two screws. Then, if needed, tighten the lower two as well.
