Paul Mörsch's thesis provides a comprehensive study on the manufacturing and optimization of clarinet reeds, with a particular focus on the methods of Hanstoni Kaufmann. After an introduction and a historical overview, the thesis examines in detail the requirements for clarinet reeds as well as their production – both through traditional craftsmanship and industrial manufacturing. A dedicated section explores manual adjustment techniques to optimize machine-made reeds. The thesis is complemented by an interview with Hanstoni Kaufmann and a survey of 87 clarinetists, offering practical insights into reed handling. This well-founded analysis makes the thesis a valuable resource for musicians, instrument makers, and researchers in the field of woodwind instruments.
