New York, New Reeds

This template was designed in collaboration with Ryan Roberts, English Hornist of the New York Philharmonic. It is designed to provide a very connected transition between the tip and the plateau (heart).
Ryan's recommendation is to use a sharp knife to define the transition as needed, focusing on the base of the tip.

Ryan Roberts uses the RDG-1 and -1N shapes on Chudnow "A" Silver staples, tied to a length of 57.5 - 58 mm.

Emmanuel Danan is solo English-Horn of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and a member of the Boulez Ensemble.

This German reed template is the result of 10 years of teaching experience in reedmaking as the assistant of Prof. Gregor Witt in the HMT Rostock and the Barenboim-Said Academy.

Background Information

Emmanuel Danan prefers a cane thickness of 0.55–0.58 mm (soaked) and a hardness of 9–11 for the production of his reeds. He uses the following shaper forms: WITT, THOM, RC13, or similar.

Settings and Processing

For optimal preparation the #DNAN template should be aligned with the center line on the template positioning ruler. The scrape length should be 10–10.5 mm. The reed is placed on the tongue until the tip sits exactly on the marked line. The hook should be placed so the reed is aligned with the middle line on the hook.
Adjust the thickness of the reed so that the tip is 0.10–0.11 mm and the middle of the back of the reed is 0.50 mm thick. If you like a thinner back, you can adjust the hook position to produce a thickness of 0.47 mm.

Fine Tuning

For improved playability and a balanced sound of the instrument, you can make the following adjustments to your reed:

If there is too much tension on the back of the reed after profiling, carefully warm up the cane above the staple and massage the tension away.

- If necessary, the response can be made easier by scraping the transition between heart and tip (area A).
  
  You can make the reed more flexible by carefully scraping a thin layer off the middle, in a diagonal scraping movement (area B).
  
  If you are satisfied with other aspects of the reed but find it too tiring for the lips, try scraping (area C).
  
  If the sound of the reed seems "electric" or buzzy, clip the tip again. The finished tip has a scrape length of 1.2–1.5 mm.
  
  After the first few hours of playing, some fibers may come loose. These should be removed by gently scraping them down.

Ultimate Flexibility

Michael Höfele is principal English horn player of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony and a member of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra. As a reed making teacher, he passes on his knowledge to his students at the University in Karlsruhe. Together with him, we have developed an English horn template MHO, which has excellent sound properties and at the same time opens up a world of expressive possibilities.

For his English Horn reeds he uses two different approaches to the scrape length. For more flexible sound (e.g. with Sacre or Donizetti) he chooses a slightly longer scrape. For a large sound, a shorter scrape is used (e.g. with the Swan by Tuonela or a big Shostakovich solo).

Background Information

Michael Höfele uses Guercio A / D10 staples and ties his reed on a length of 56 mm. These are then clipped to a length of 54 mm with a scrape length of 11 – 11.5 mm. He tends toward harder cane with a gouge thickness of 0.67 – 0.68 mm. To shape his cane, Michael Höfele uses our Shaper Form HRM, which we also developed together with him.

This template was developed and tried with an oboe copy of Stanesby made by Pau Orriols. Its short and almost straight tip provides for good response of the forked and half-hole fingerings.

The STB template was designed to work with the English Horn "U" scrape limiter.
Tip: for additional flexibility, we recommend extending the scrape by hand towards the thread wrapping.

Nicolas Cock-Vassiliou, principal oboist of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, developed his personal template with us. When used with the W2 scrape limiter it will provide a typical French scrape, if desired. Nicolas prefers a rather short tip, which ensures a beautiful, flexible sound and maximum expressiveness in all registers. Nicolas uses Chiarugi2 staples and our LM2 shape.
