Formed from the start

Allowing reeds to dry on the forming mandrel gives them the desired shape on the inside while also reducing the effort required to form the reed waist with pliers.

Our drying board with wooden plate is compatible with all interchangeable oboe and bassoon mandrels from our range. Thanks to its thoughtful design, the mandrels can be replaced at any time without compromising stability. For maximum flexibility, the base plate and mandrels can be ordered separately, allowing you to create your own custom combination. The wooden plate is available with or without securing points, which allow the drying board to be safely mounted at your workstation.

Inspired by a Master

This forming mandrel is inspired by the forming mandrels designed by Don Christlieb. This new version, similar to the original design, pairs perfectly with the Herzberg shape but works equally well with most shapes.

The mandrel includes several engraved lines: one which marks a recommended position for forming the tube, and one which marks a recommended position after beveling. The mandrel has also been extended to include a third line for contrabassoon reeds.

Eject

The ejector ring for contrabassoon reeds is used to easily detach the reed from the mandrel after the wire has been fixed. In addition, by using an ejector ring you avoid twisting the reed when pulling it off the mandrel, which would otherwise lead to undesired blade slippage.

Due to it's unique design, the ejector ring can be set to any desired position on the mandrel.

The ejector ring fits on all mandrels with a maximum diameter of 6.5 mm, and can also be used as a depth stop on spiral-fluted and diamond-coated reamers.

- Use the Ejector Ring as a depth stop, so that your reeds are always formed the same way and you do not have to remember how far above or below the line you form your reeds.
- Turn the silver portion of the Ejector Ring to begin pushing your reed off the mandrel.
- Using the Ejector Ring allows you to easily remove the reed without twisting the tube and causing blade slippage.
- Using the included hex key you can adjust the position of the Ejector Ring to any position on the forming mandrel you desire.
- The Ejector Ring can also be used as a depth stop on the spiral reamer, allowing for a consistent final diameter when reaming the inside of the tube.

Wrap it tight

Our German brass wire gives your reeds the support they need. Available in two thicknesses, on 50 g spools, in 1 kg loops, or cut to length, as well as in two hardnesses. The Standard hardness is the wire we have always stocked. To accomodate the requests of some of our customers we now also stock wire which is somewhat softer but still provides the necessary structure.

Our packages of cut-to-length wire contain 1000 pieces of wire, cut to 80 mm, ready to use.

Note: for Americans who are accustomed to purchasing wire measured in gauge, 22-gauge wire is 0.64 mm thick. You will likely find the 0.6 mm wire to be more to your liking.

Formed from the start

Allowing reeds to dry on the forming mandrel gives them the desired shape on the inside while also reducing the effort required to form the reed waist with pliers.

This item contains only the wooden base plate and is not compatible with our Drying Pin for bassoon. All mandrels labelled as "interchangeable" will fit in this drying board base.
