Smooth as Butter

Right before we fold the cane and build a blank is the last chance we have to work on the inside of the cane. The Sanding Tool is easy to use in multiple ways, giving us complete control of our reeds.

Inside

Many reed makers prefer to sand the inside of the cane one last time to even out any possible inconsistencies, as well as lend some brightness and brilliance back to the sound. The soft foam tubing allows the sandpaper to conform to any size gouge.

Outside

Looking to smooth out the outer contour of your shape? Fix a small bump, or blade wasn't quite as sharp as you thought? Simple fix: with the sanding tool you can easily smooth out the outer contour.

Edges

If you are looking to knock down the sharp corners on the inside of the cane, allowing the blades to better sit on top of and align with each other, the design of the sanding tool allows you to do so gently.

Extra

Each Sanding Tool comes with a few sheets of sandpaper. Replacement packs are also available. These sheets of P1000 sandpaper are cut to size and ready to use in the sanding tool. This sandpaper is designed to be used with soaked or dry cane, and is categorized as ultra-fine. This means it will not remove a lot of a cane, but rather smooth and polish the surface.

Short and Sweet

Trimming the tube of your bassoon reeds has never been easier. The new Trimming Guide, designed by Matthew Harvell, allows you to precisely shorten the tube of your reeds, opening a new world of exploration and consistency. Gone are the days of measuring with a ruler, marking with a pencil, clipping by hand, and hoping everything lines up afterwards.

Set It

The jig fits inside the slot of the reed guillotine. Simply line up the end of the arm with the length you want for the tube.
The number on the jig reflects the length of the profiled portion of cane, so the arm shows where the profile ends and the tube begins.

Trim It

Place the fold of the cane against the stop on the jig, with the tube between the blades of the guillotine, and clip the tube to length.
Repeat the same for the other side and you are ready to form your blank with a shorter tube.

The R'S Prints blade sharpening jig makes sharpening your profiling blades easy. Place the blade into the jig, run it over your sharpening stone, and voila - like new.

Set up is simple:
place a piece of paper underneath the wheels, then place the blade so that it is touching the sharpening stone. Tighten the screw and the angle is all set.

Remove the piece of paper then run the jig over the stone several times until you see an even reflective surface on the bottom of the blade. This indicates that the blade has been properly sharpened.

Take the blade off the jig and place the flat side on the sharpening stone. After 3-5 to passes to remove the burr, and the blade is ready to go.
