Compact

Our compact series of reamers is exactly the same as our full size reamers, but with a smaller handle.

This smaller handle is designed for musicians who travel a lot, have smaller hands, or are just looking for a smaller handle on their reed making tools. It offers space savings while still providing enough handle to have a solid grip on the tool.

</hgroup>
<hgroup>

Diamond Coated PLUS

Our mandrels and reamers complete the process of fitting the reed precisely to the bocal. The matching parabolic taper of the mandrel and reamer allows for precise fitting of reeds on the instrument, as well as the proper volume inside the reed.

Use the Reed Tool Brush to keep your tools clean and prolong their longevity.

<hgroup>

“Drills for Winds” by Ole Kristian Dahl is an innovative and practice-oriented training concept for woodwind and brass players, developed from over 25 years of intensive experience in professional orchestral playing and teaching. Based on the original “Drills” system created for bassoon, this edition has been specifically adapted for use with a wide range of wind instruments.
At its core is a clearly structured training system designed to systematically improve fundamental playing techniques. These include breathing, embouchure, articulation, intonation, register transitions, and sound control. The concept is built on daily practice routines and provides efficient tools for the demands of everyday orchestral playing.
Over many years, the system has been continuously refined through teaching and coaching, incorporating feedback from students and professional musicians. It has proven to be highly successful and has made a significant contribution to the training of numerous orchestral musicians.

<hgroup>

The BREATHTAKING Lithe Premium II-R is a high-quality bassoon strap designed for demanding musicians who place the highest value on comfort, sound, and ergonomics. Its thoughtfully engineered construction adapts perfectly to the body, providing a noticeably lighter playing experience. The sophisticated support system distributes weight evenly, reduces pressure points, and significantly enhances comfort even during extended use.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

The specially designed shoulder section shifts the instrument’s weight onto the shoulders, relieving strain on the neck and promoting a natural, relaxed posture. This positively affects breathing, endurance, and tone production while creating a lighter overall carrying sensation.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

The unique front bar construction keeps the chest area free, supports deeper breathing, and enables an open, resonant tone. The front bar is designed for easy adjustment to suit the player’s individual preferences.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Made from high-quality, vegetable-tanned Vachetta leather, the strap offers a soft feel and exceptional durability. The suede lining ensures a secure, non-slip fit.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

The triangular adjuster shape allows for quick adjustments, while the zigzag cut on both sides reliably prevents slipping.

Reed Tip Guillotine COMPACT 220.00 €

<hgroup>

Start Off Right

A reed that's cut unevenly is already fighting against you before you've scraped anything. The redesigned Reed Guillotine makes sure that never happens. More compact than its predecessor, it slips easily into your case – so the same precision that's on your workbench is with you in the rehearsal room, on tour, or wherever you're making reeds that day.

A clear millimeter scale – with markings for the most common bassoon and contrabassoon lengths already built in – lets you set your exact target length in seconds. A dedicated groove keeps the wire out of the way, and the hardened steel blade cuts cleanly through reeds up to 22 mm wide. When it eventually needs it, we can resharpen the cutting unit for you.

One clean cut. The right length, every time.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Easy to Use

The mandrel holder now swivels upward, so placing and removing your reed is as smooth as butter. Less time wrestling with the machine means more attention where it belongs – on the reed.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Even

Even with the swiveling mandrel, the reed stays held at a perfect 90 degrees to the cutting blades. The cut is always even, always symmetrical – so both blades start equal before you've made a single scrape.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Centered

Guide lines on the blades show you exactly when the reed is centred and square – so the cut lands perpendicular to the reed's axis, not at a slight angle that throws off the whole blade. What you see before you cut is what you get after.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Positioned Exactly

A knurled knob at the end of the mandrel lets you push or pull the reed into position with ease – precise, controlled, and without disturbing the alignment you've just set.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Tuned

How freely the mandrel slides is entirely up to you. Tighten the screw on the underside for firm, deliberate movement – or loosen it for a lighter glide. Either way, the machine responds the way you want it to.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Trim It

Use the trimming guide (available separately) to make trimming the tubes easy. Simply set the length, put the cane in, and clip the end of the cane to shorten the tubes.

FAQ

My blade does no longer look good. What can I do about the tarnish?

You can remove the tarnish with metal polish.

Why is there some tarnish on my blades?

The reason why we use a steel that creates a patina over use is a technical one. The cutting abilities of such a steel are better than those of stainless steels.

What can I do to check the quality of the cut?

You can check the cut by trying to cut a piece of paper. If the blade does the job then there is no need to exchange them. If they do not, it can be for two reasons:

1.	The blade is really blunt. Then an exchange of blades would be good.

2.	The 4 screws that hold the front blade are too loose. Tighten them just enough the cutting blade can be moved tight up and down but the blade cannot wobble. Start with the upper two screws. Then, if needed, tighten the lower two as well.

Bake:

Bake the cookies in the oven for 8 - 10 minutes, or until they are a light golden-brown.
Remove from the oven and allow the cookies to cool off.

Decoration (optional):

Mix the powdered sugar with a small amount of water or lemon juice until it forms a glaze. Use this to cover the cookies.
Embellish with sprinkles, chocolate chips, or nuts as desired.

Tip:

The dough can easily be prepared in advance and frozen. Simply thaw before the next baking session and continue.

Guten Appetit!

Eject

The ejector ring for bassoon reeds is used to easily detach the reed from the mandrel after the wire has been fixed. In addition, by using an ejector ring you avoid twisting the reed when pulling it off the mandrel, which would otherwise lead to undesired blade slippage.

Due to it's unique design, the ejector ring can be set to any desired position on the mandrel.

The ejector ring fits on all mandrels with a maximum diameter of 6 mm, and can also be used as a depth stop on our spiral-fluted and diamond-coated reamers.
We also have a model of the Ejector Ring for Contrabassoon Mandrels.

Use the Ejector Ring as a depth stop, so that your reeds are always formed the same way and you do not have to remember how far above or below the line you form your reeds.

Using the included hex key you can adjust the position of the Ejector Ring to any position on the forming mandrel you desire.

The Ejector Ring can also be used as a depth stop on the spiral reamer, allowing for a consistent final diameter when reaming the inside of the tube.

Similarly, the Ejector Ring can be used as a depth stop on the diamond reamer, providing consistency from reed to reed.

Back to Beginnings

This mandrel is designed to return the tip opening to its original dimensions. It was created in cooperation with Per Hannevold and his teacher Harold Goltzer.

Reeds often lose their inner curvature, becoming flatter and closing down over time.

This mandrel works by bypassing the tube and opening the space between the blades of the reed from the inside.

This allows you to open up the inside of the reed again without the need for drastic adjustments with pliers.

Measure. Sort. Process.

When making reeds, selecting the right cane is an important first step. Especially when preparing a large number of pieces of cane, measuring each diameter individually with a caliper can quickly become time-consuming.

The Reeds 'n Stuff Diameter Gauge makes this step significantly easier and faster. It allows you to quickly check and sort the diameters of bassoon cane before further processing. The gauge covers a range from 22.00 to 32.00 mm in 0.50 mm increments, making it easy to identify the cane with the desired diameter at a glance.

The compact gauge is particularly practical for everyday use. Made from dimensionally stable aluminium, it is robust and durable, while the anodized surface protects the scale from scratches and ensures long-lasting readability.

Our Diameter Gauge is a high-quality, time-saving tool for bassoon reed makers who value precision and durable tools.

Especially suitable for French Basson

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Durable & Precise

The production of our Straight Shapers requires the highest level of precision and involves several elaborate machining steps. Modern CNC technology ensures an exact contour and consistently high quality.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Combined with a specially tailored hardening process, this results in exceptionally dimensionally stable and durable tools. The result is a hand-operated reed shaper that enables precise, comfortable, and reproducible work.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

The pair of engraved lines on the sides mark the narrowest point of the shape and are an important tool for precise shaping. For optimal shape transfer, shape from both sides towards this narrowest point.

The outermost lines are to help center shorter cane (118 mm for bassoon, 148 mm for contrabassoon).

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Thanks to the silicone tips, both gouged and profiled cane can be shaped.
The silicone tips secure the thinner parts of the profiled cane in the center and prevent the cane from slipping.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

The silicone tips can be removed and replaced as desired, especially when shaping unprofiled cane.

</hgroup>

Well Formed

The parabolic forming mandrel for contra bassoon reeds is newly designed to meet your reed making needs. Several crucial measurements were taken from a host of contra bassoon reeds in the most popular shapes to provide key thicknesses at the back of the reed as well as throughout the tube.

The tip of the mandrel is less than 2 mm wide - small enough to fit between the pieces of cane after folding and help open up the tube. Use one mandrel to form the tubes from start to finish.

</hgroup>

Diamond Coated

Our mandrels and reamers complete the process of fitting the reed precisely
to the bocal. The matching parabolic taper of the mandrel and reamer allows
for precise fitting of reeds on the instrument, as well as the proper volume inside the
reed.

The multi-fluted Spiral Reamer cuts very easily and the Diamond Reamer
finishes the inside perfectly.

Use the Reed Tool Brush to keep your tools clean and prolong their longevity.

<hgroup>

Easy and Efficient

The tip profiling machine is the most efficient machine
for creating the profile in the front half of the reed.

This machine allows you to precisely produce a symmetrical and playable reed,
using our many available templates.

Built of high-quality anodized aluminum and a special german steel,
the tip profiling machine is built to last for many years.
Linear ball bearings provide a comfortable user experience.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

A sharp blade, always.

Dull blades interrupt your flow – and resetting blade height every time you change one is exactly the kind of friction that breaks your concentration. The Blade 360° solves both problems. When the cutting edge dulls, simply rotate to the next sharp section and carry on – at least six times per blade. And because the blade height is set once from the underside and stays locked, changing edges never throws off your setup.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Prepared for Transport

Prepare your tip profiler for transport.

Insert the mandrel into the designated hole on the left side, screw the wooden handle into the threaded hole on the right side, and lock the carriage into place with the transport locking screw on the left side of the machine.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Transport Bag Included

The Reeds 'n Stuff transport case features a simple design that's easy to use.
The foam interior allows for safe transport and provides a snug fit. The tools to adjust the machine can be stored in the zipper compartment on top of the case. The handle provides portability wherever you need it.

You can also test a template for 60 days.

Always ready

Like a humidor, this case maintains stable climate conditions.

The newly designed air vent can be adjusted to allow airflow from the outside or to keep the case hermetically sealed. When the air vent is closed, the rubber seal protects your reeds from changing outside conditions. Using the included sponge you can add water to raise the humidity.

With one glance at the hygrometer, you can make informed decisions about how to care for your reeds and keep the humidity under your control.
The acrylic glass can be cleaned easily with a cloth.

</hgroup>

A Shape for Modern Times

This shape was designed in collaboration with Dana Jessen. Jessen is a bassoonist, improviser, and electroacoustic musician, co-founder of the contemporary reed quintet Splinter Reeds, and Associate Professor of Contemporary Music & Improvisation at the Oberlin Conservatory.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Watch as Dana Jessen explains all the advantages of a wider bassoon shape.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Durable & Precise

The production of our Straight Shapers requires the highest level of precision and involves several elaborate machining steps. Modern CNC technology ensures an exact contour and consistently high quality.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Combined with a specially tailored hardening process, this results in exceptionally dimensionally stable and durable tools. The result is a hand-operated reed shaper that enables precise, comfortable, and reproducible work.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Thanks to the silicone tips, both gouged and profiled cane can be shaped.
The silicone tips secure the thinner parts of the profiled cane in the center and prevent the cane from slipping.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

The silicone tips can be removed and replaced as desired, especially when shaping unprofiled cane.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Never a Dull Blade

The R'S Prints blade sharpening jig makes sharpening your profiling blades easy. Place the blade into the jig, run it over your sharpening stone, and voila - like new.

</hgroup>
<hgroup>

Set up is simple:
place a piece of paper underneath the wheels, then place the blade so that it is touching the sharpening stone. Tighten the screw and the angle is all set.

</hgroup>
<hgroup>

Remove the piece of paper then run the jig over the stone several times until you see an even reflective surface on the bottom of the blade. This indicates that the blade has been properly sharpened.

</hgroup>
<hgroup>

Take the blade off the jig and place the flat side on the sharpening stone. After 3-5 to passes to remove the burr, and the blade is ready to go.

Can the carbon version of the blade be sharpened with the Blade Sharpening Jig?

The carbon version of the blade can also be sharpened. For this you will need a diamond stone, as the carbon blades are much harder. A regular sharpening stone will usually not do the job well enough.

The strips protect for up to 6 months. The set contains 8 tarnish protection strips.

Please ensure that unused strips are stored in an airtight, cool and dry place to prevent premature consumption. The strips are harmless to health and environmentally friendly. Used strips can be disposed of with household waste in accordance with local official regulations.

.drills. 1.0 is an established system for bassoon playing that Prof. Ole Kristian Dahl has developed over the last 25 years. The first iteration of this system was the result of his own daily practice, focusing on honing the everyday tools he needed for playing in orchestra. By implementing the system in his teaching for the last 15 years, he has received constant evaluation and feedback from students and professionals.
1985 Gilberto Zappatini’s own unsatisfactory experience with harnesses made him invent the ingenious Zappatini harness. Since then, several
thousand Zappatini harnesses have been sold.

The synthesis model is a synthesis of harness and the traditional neck strap. Players can enjoy maximum freedom of
movement together with perfect ergonomics.

Synthesis caters to the needs
of women players: with this model there is
no undue pressure on the breast. Particularly in the case of children and adolescents, whose bodies are still growing, great attention must be paid to posture and an optimum dispersion of the weight of the instrument. With the special kid
size, even children can play their instrument intensively without acquiring a health-damaging posture.

A Comprehensive Overview

As the sound-producing mechanism for the bassoon, the reed is a vital component in the sound of the entire instrument. While pre-manufactured reeds are widely available for purchase at music stores, this one-size-fits-all option hardly does justice to the unique needs of the musician and the piece. Many bassoonists, including seasoned professional bassoonist Eric Arbiter, instead choose to craft their own reeds. A nuanced and difficult craft to master, reed-making involves specialized machinery and necessitates special attention to the thickness, and even topography, of the reed itself. When done correctly, however, this process results in a reed that not only produces a more beautiful sound, but also holds up to even the most demanding musical performances.

In The Way of Cane, Arbiter demystifies this process for bassoonists of all levels of experience. Drawing from his decades-long experience as both musician and reed-maker, Arbiter provides a comprehensive yet accessible overview of the craft, from the differing sound qualities produced by changing the dimensions of the reed's blades to the changes in the reed's behaviors as it passes through cycles of wetting and drying during production. Small changes in each of these variables, Arbiter explains, contribute to the ultimate goal of producing a bassoonist's ideal sound. With step-by-step instructions, detailed photos that further illuminate the reed-making process, and a companion website featuring the author's own recordings. The Way of Cane emphasizes the importance of the reed to the bassoon's sound, as well as the harmony between reed and musician.

Quality over Quantity

The characteristics of the cane have a significant influence on the success of our reed making. The appearance of the cane is often deceptive and we quickly learn:

The truth lies beneath the surface.

The hardness tester offers an objective way to judge the quality, not just the quantity of cane. By measuring the hardness of the cane at both ends we are able to discern whether a piece of cane has the same qualities throughout the entire piece. This way we can ensure that the two blades of a reed will vibrate similarly.

Save yourself valuable time and increase the quality of your reed making.
Achieve reliable and repeatable results.

Our hardness testers are available in both analog or digital formats.
The precision of both devices is identical, the only difference lies in the convenience of use.

FAQ

Why is the hardness tester so important?

First of all, the time saved in selecting suitable canes for you offers a great advantage. You save valuable working time that you would otherwise spend gouging, shaping, tying on and scraping canes that would not have given you a suitable result anyway. More important, however, is the fact that you can increase the quality of your reed making and get more reliable results.

Should the cane be measured dry or soaked?

It should be noted that only sufficiently dried cane will give useful results. It is not advisable to use soaked cane. It is best to note the test results on the cane and later on the staple. This will give you an overview of what works well for you personally.

In what stage should the cane be measured for hardness?

It is best to use the hardness tester after pregouging if you have a pregouging machine. The basic requirement is a smooth surface and a consistent thickness. If you use the small pregouger instead of a machine, you should test the cane after gouging.

Are the measuring results for pregouged cane the same as for gouged cane?

If the material is thicker, the measurement results will be higher.

What are the usual measuring results?

Usually we get readings from seven hundredths (hard) to almost 40 hundredths (soft).

Are there different measurement results for the hardness testers?

Yes, as there is no standard scale and the factory tolerance of the dial indicator is 2 hundredths, it is possible that the hardness testers show different results.

Is there a difference between the hardness tester for oboe, bassoon, clarinet and bagpipe?

Yes, the hardness testers have each been set up for a specific instrument. The heights of the support plate differ. The so-called arbour, on which the cane lies, is available individually, allowing you to convert your machine for other instruments.

Can the hardness tester be used as a dial indicator?

The support plate of the hardness tester is too large to obtain precise results. The thickness of finished reeds, for example, cannot be measured in any case. Also with gouged cane inaccurate measurement results may occur. For this reasons we do not recommend to double the hardness tester as a dial indicator.

What is the difference between the analog and digital hardness tester? Which one is more accurate?

Both differ only in the convenience of the reading. With the digital hardness tester, the zero position can be reached by pressing a button. With the analogue hardness tester, the dial has to be turned. The precision of both devices is the same. If required, you can connect the digital hardness tester to your computer to create personal statistics.

The digital dial shows a number and SET blinks. The number shown does not change even if I move the axle up or down.

Please keep ZERO pressed for 3 seconds. This erases the SET memory.

When do I have to change the battery?

The battery must be changed when the display flashes, the battery symbol appears, or nothing is displayed. The battery indicates the type used (e.g. LR 44).

How do I change the battery?

Do not touch the new battery with your fingers, use a piece of cloth. The battery compartment is located on the upper left side of the dial gauge. Use a small screwdriver or the tip of a sharp knife to lift off the small plastic cover. Insert the new battery exactly as you found the old one. When inserting the new battery be careful not to touch, bend, or break the battery contacts (the small pieces of metal inside the dial gauge).
You can find detailed instructions here.

Does the oboe digital hardness test ever need to be recalibrated?

The hardness tester generally does not need to be recalibrated. Recalibration is only necessary if it has been damaged or if the locking screw that holds the dial gauge was accidentally loosened. Under normal conditions, no recalibration is required.

These high-quality bassoon reeds are crafted from carefully selected Güner cane, grown in the Mediterranean climate of Turkey.
Mr. Güner completed his studies with Prof. Martens in Lübeck and now performs as a professional orchestral musician. His practical experience directly informs the selection and processing of the material.

<hgroup>

Clean – inside and out

We've all been there: a reed that worked fantastically last week is dull today and doesn't quite vibrate right. Then we look on the inside and it's ... less than clean. We scrape the gunk out of our reeds, but in the process break a corner or cause a split in the tip.

Or we need to try one of our student's reeds, but we're pretty sure they didn't brush their teeth before their lesson and aren't in the mood to have someone else's lunch leftovers in our own instrument.

The Reed Cleaner offers an intuitive way to clean your reeds in seconds, while keeping the reed intact.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Simply place the reed firmly on the Reed Cleaner.

</hgroup>

<hgroup>

Hold the wide end against the faucet. Turn on the water and watch all the unmentionables inside your reed wash down the drain. Now your reed is ready to go!
